Redemptive Suffering and Me

written 11/1/2024, by Aubrie F.

You probably see a lot of messages on social media ads as you’re scrolling, billboards that you pass, and even emails in your inbox that are aimed in some way at selling you some product or service that will ‘bring you more comfort.’

Isn’t our culture all about making things easier and more convenient and more comfortable? I mean, I don’t hate it-because I use it myself- but hello, grocery pick up or delivery services?! We can even effectively avoid the discomfort of having to use a squeaky cart at the grocery store and getting our own food off the shelves!

However, how to best avoid discomfort (suffering) is not really the main question for Christians, though. It’s actually all about whether you suffer well or not. Whether you choose to pick up your cross or not.

And, following Christ will always come with crosses, as I am sure you know and have experienced.

Ultimately, Jesus calls us to share in the redemption of the world through extending a particle of his cross to us. It’s actually an honor, and can be seen as a gift, to get the opportunity to suffer for this reason.

As Mother Angelica said, “Every pain we endure with love, every cross borne with resignation, benefits every man, woman, and child in the Mystical Body of Christ.”

If you’ve never embraced suffering with intentionality before, it can seem pretty crazy to think that one could ‘suffer joyfully.’ Yet, that’s exactly what Biking for Babies helps missionaries to do: to give purpose to suffering, to unite ourselves with Christ on the Cross, and to do it out of love for others.

Joy comes from knowing that suffering has profound meaning and that redemptive suffering can move mountains.

If you feel like you could use the ‘secret sauce’ of how to suffer well… Biking for Babies’ mission opportunity could definitely be for you!

Applications for young adults (ages 18-39) for the 2025 mission opportunity are open from Nov 1-February 21 at this link.
