Birthright: A PRC Story

Over the next few months, Biking for Babies will highlight our pregnancy resource center partners. If you are in close proximity to a center, we invite you to volunteer your time or gifts, to join them on the front line of the pro-life movement, to save lives. If you know someone who could benefit from the resources and support of this center, forward this blog post to them. God bless!

Brothers-Keeper-PhotoBirthright is a pregnancy resource center in Olney, Maryland. Birthright of Montgomery County provides abortion alternative services to those in their region. Services include free pregnancy tests, peer pregnancy options counseling (in English & Spanish), and information on abortion procedures. Fran, executive director of Birthright, shares a story:

Birthright operates an 800 Helpline in Atlanta, Georgia. When a client calls, they are matched with the Birthright office nearest to the location from which they are calling.
Last November a woman phoned the Helpline. She was in a difficult place. She was the mother of a five year old, working full time, in school part time, working on a graduate degree, 6 weeks pregnant and was feeling pressure from the father of her child to terminate the pregnancy. After her first conversation with the peer counselor, she was troubled and conflicted. She could not understand how the man she was in relationship with could ask her to abort their child. This left her feeling very sad, discouraged and in an especially dark place.
As conversations, support and encouragement continued, our client came to value herself, her womanhood, as well as her own dignity, and decided to bring her child to birth – continuing with the pregnancy. She began to evaluate the relationship with the father of her baby, completed another semester of school and exams, this past December, learned that she is having a little boy and is aspiring to launch a small business by summer! And amidst all of this she moved from one apartment to another, as living conditions in the first were not up to par.
Recently, she shared that she is getting increasingly excited and feels her baby boy kick all the time! She is finishing papers and is once again studying for end of school year finals. Of great importance to her is that the relationship with the father has improved! He too is excited about his sons’s pending birth and has been supportive in many ways, for which she is very grateful.
None of this has been easy for this client, but because of her recognition of her own inherent value and that of her child, she is making bold and courageous decisions and is only looking forward. She is happy, grateful and joyful. She also expressed her gratitude to Birthright for “reaching out always.” That in a nutshell is what Birthright does and will continue to do, “reach out always” and partner with women who are at a crossroads, helping them navigate their life circumstances and see the possible.
