Happy month of Mary! In the Catholic faith, May is a month devoted to our heavenly Mother Mary, asking her to increase our faith and trust in her Son (among other things). Divine Mercy Sunday was two days ago, and for many of us, it gave us a moment to reflect on our sinfulness but more importantly, God’s loving mercy! Part of this is trusting in the Lord’s goodness. Not all of us are willing to take someone at their word, especially when it seems too-good-to-be-true.

My parents taught me from a young age the importance of a smile. To them, it demonstrated not only joy, but a sense of welcoming for people around them…They taught me to believe that if I took on the world with a smile, I would enjoy each day more, and, more over, give myself an opportunity to help those around me.
We live in a culture that allows us to close our eyes to the pain of others. But what if we opened our eyes and hearts to the needs of our brothers and sisters around us?

We see brokenness in our world all the time; there’s no doubt about it. And most everyone desires to help someone in some way, whether we are Catholic, Lutheran, Christian, or anything else. We search for the greatest need and say, “There is where I want to give back.” Philosophers, teachers, rabbis, preachers, monks and nuns, inspirational speakers–all of them have offered their own insight to the world’s greatest need by how they dedicate their life. But to quote one of the most quotable humans of all time: “But I shall show you a still more excellent way.”
